Synopsis: |
This symposium will focus on the creation of the Chicago Council for Science and Technology (C2ST), the first metropolitan science council in the United States. Building on the successful model of metropolitan councils on foreign policy over the last 50 years, the C2ST was incorporated in spring 2007 and received its 501 (c)(3) approval later that same year. The C2ST has initiated a program of lectures, workshops, and symposia and seeks to become a forum for discourse both within the scientific community in the metropolitan Chicago area and between the scientific community and the broader public. We hope that the C2ST will become a model for similar science councils in other metropolitan areas. This symposium will discuss the rationale for the creation of the council, the process of formation, and some of its current programs and future plans. A series of short presentations will focus on the successful record of metropolitan foreign relations councils in sustaining a national commitment to internationalism; the critical role of informal science learning organizations in building the infrastructure of the new council; the role of Argonne, Fermi, and other major research laboratories in the development of the council; the role of research universities in building the council; the role of science-based corporations in the creation of the council; and the importance of including existing cross-cutting consortia and organizations in the council. |
