Abstract
How far away are the galaxies? What is the size of our Galaxy? How can we tell? The answers to these questions came with a crucial discovery of period-luminosity relation for variable stars known as Cepheids, made by a modest, hardworking astronomer - the remarkable Miss Henrietta Leavitt. The Scientific Visualization project at Cal State LA is bringing this discovery to life with the use of computer animations, the medium of the 21st century.
