Session Description: Nanotechnology and microfluidics have become increasing important in the development of effective cancer therapeutic and imaging agents as well as cancer diagnostics. Tumor blood vessels are leaky and allow preferential uptake of nanoparticles (<100nm) at the tumor sites. In recent years, many investigators have exploited this enhanced permeability effect (EPR) by developing multifunctional nanocarriers that can deliver both cytotoxic drug and imaging agent to the tumor site. In addition, tumor targeting ligands have been used to enhance the uptake of these nanotheranostic agents into the tumor cells. In this session, one lecture will be devoted to the use of modern microfluidics and highly sensitive detection techniques for multiplexed protein biomarker measurements from single cancer cell. The other lectures will be devoted to the development and in vivo testing of three different multifunctional nanotheranostic platforms: liposome, hard nanoparticle (magnetic iron oxide nanoparticle), and soft nanoparticle (micelle).
