Session Description:
Nanotechnology is a rapidly advancing discipline incorporating chemistry, materials science, physics and biology that has emerged as a potentially transformative paradigm to rationally design cancer medicines with improved therapeutic indices. Much of the excitement stems from the inherent versatility and customizable nature of nanoparticles, which can be multifunctionalized to incorporate targeting elements, a wide range of therapeutic cargo (drugs, siRNAs and peptides) and imaging agents. Moreover, nanotherapeutics can be specifically tailored to the molecular characteristics of tumors, thereby offering unprecedented opportunities for personalized medicine. Nevertheless, nanomedicines face a number of distinctive barriers to their clinical translation, including difficulties in achieving robust tumor targeting and/or penetration, systemic toxicity, and GMP production and regulatory challenges. This session will highlight recent progress in the design and evaluation of several novel nanotherapeutic platforms for cancer and explore their implications for bringing nanomedicines into the clinic.
