Session Number and Title:
070.BPA and its alternatives: Quantifying the risks.
Sunday, Jun 12, 2011, 1:30 PM - 3:00 PM
Food Processing & Packaging
Food Safety & Defense
Bisphenol A (BPA) is widely used by the food packaging/processing industry for can linings and other things. Recent toxicological concerns have led to recommendations to discontinue many, if not all, of the current uses. This would require adopting replacement substances and/or procedures that have other risks. There is substantial controversy surrounding how to quantify the risks—particularly for extremely low doses resulting from package leaching. In addition, there are major differences in the alternatives that could lead to decreased product safety and shelf life. This symposium discusses the impact of implementing such changes, including the likely risks of BPA at low exposures (e.g., in the range of doses likely to be encountered as a result of leaching from packaging). The symposium includes discussion about the alternatives to BPA, an evaluation of potential low-dose risks for these compounds as well as differences in performance, and the impact on packaging and manufacturing.
Collaborating Division 1:
Toxicology & Safety Evaluation
Collaborating Division 2:
Collaborating Division 3:
Food Laws & Regulations
Learning Objective 1:
Participants will obtain a greater understanding of the risks of BPA and its alternatives - product failure risks as well as consumer risks due to the presence of BPA epoxy resins and its alternatives in food.
Learning Objective 2:
Participants will hear the impact of assumptions, methods, and regulations.
