Session Description: Professionals involved in different sectors of the food system will provide background information on the earthquake and tsunami-triggered emergency situation arising from the damaged Daiichi nuclear power plant in Fukushima, Japan. First-hand perspectives from a Hawaii-based food scientist, Alaska state regulatory official, and U.S. Food and Drug Administration representative will be provided. Insight into the impact on seafoods and other foods of the radiation released from the damaged reactors will be provided. Details on analytical testing activities and the U.S. FDA’s joint efforts with other Federal agencies, state authorities, and the Government of Japan will be presented. Context for science-based understanding of the food safety risk and communication will be provided.
Learning Objective 1: Gain insights into the impact of the earthquake and tsunami-triggered emergency stemming from the damaged nuclear power plant in Northern Japan on food safety.
Learning Objective 2: Understand monitoring, screening, and testing of food imported from Japan by federal and state regulatory bodies.
