The restaurant industry plays a critical role in consumers’ lifestyles by serving as many as 130 million meals a day to Americans. One area that could have an impact on public health is menu labeling. Section 4205 of the Healthcare Reform Act requires restaurants with 20 or more locations to add calories to menus, menu boards, and drive-thru menu boards for standard menu items. Additional nutrition information must be available upon request. This session includes pertinent information on the steps restaurants are taking and what challenges exist within the restaurant industry to comply with the new law. Research conducted by the National Restaurant Association indicates that a growing number of consumers are interested in healthier options. The new federal menu labeling law can ultimately impact the demand of certain menu items and thus drive trends within the restaurant industry. The session also includes current trend data within the restaurant and foodservice industries.

Participants will be able to understand the various aspects and issues surrounding the new federal menu-labeling law and articulate the current nutrition landscape impacting the restaurant industry.
